Welcome to the League of German Girls living history website, which is a part of the larger historical research page about the same topic.

If you are not familiar with the terms “living history” or “reenactment”, you might be wondering what this website is all about. We hope that you will take a few minutes and read the paragraphs below to understand what living history and reenactment are all about.
 

What is Living History?

Living History is an activity that incorporates historical tools, activities and dress into an interactive presentation that seeks to give observers and participants a sense of stepping back in time. Living history is an educational medium used by living history museums, historic sites, heritage interpreters, schools and historical reenactment groups to educate the public in particular areas of history, such as clothing styles, pastimes and handicrafts, or to simply convey a sense of the everyday life of a certain period in history.

What is Reenactment?

Historical Reenactment is a type of role-play in which participants attempt to recreate some aspects of a historical event or period. This may be as narrow as a specific moment from a battle, such as the reenactment of Pickett’s Charge, or as broad as an entire period.

We are not a re-enacting unit because our members are not all located in the same geographical area, nor do we usually attend events as a unit. Instead, we are an international group of people who have a strong historical interest in the League of German Girls and who want to educate people by doing the impression at schools, air shows, and other living history events.

This website exists to help those who are interested in doing this impression to find out more about the League of German Girls – what it was, what they did, and what the uniforms and equipment looked like. This site also serves as a guide for putting together your impression: information on what was worn and how, to links where you can purchase items for your own kit.

We hope that, if you chose to do this impression, you will use this website as a guide and resource, and that you will chose to do the impression well, rather than just throwing something together. We strive to be historically accurate, which is not difficult with a little bit of effort.

Disclaimer

We are a group of dedicated historians interested in the history and uniforms of the League of German Girls. As such, we strive to be objective and educated on the subject, and we do not allow, tolerate, or associate with any kind of people or groups who share the political beliefs of national socialism, the Nazi party, or the Third Reich. The display of swastikas, runes, or other potentially offensive symbols connected with the Third Reich is done for historical and educational purposes.

This group as a whole, as well as its individual members, does not tolerate neo-Nazis, skinheads, racists, and extremists. The aforementioned are banned from becoming official members in this living history group and from participating in our Yahoo list. If you encounter people doing the BDM impression in bad taste and with a political connotation at an event, they are not members of this group and we distance ourselves from their behavior and beliefs.

Our mission is to do an accurate, objective impression of the BDM for educational and historical purposes. And, of course, have fun while doing it. After all, what’s the point in doing all this research and spending all this money on the impression if you don’t enjoy the hobby!
