Four months before her mothers passing from bone cancer, historical author, Cynthia Sandor, found her mother’s secret journal from the time she was in the League of German Girls. With much excitement, Cynthia raced to the hospital to show her mother the treasure she had found.
Gertrude’s tired eyes beamed with excitement. “Where did you find this?” she gasped in disbelief.
“I found this when I was cleaning your bedroom. What is this? Did you write it? Can you ready it?” Cynthia asked as she handed her mother the journal.
Gertrude’s hand pierced with an intravenous needle reached out. Within an instant, the epoch of time passed from daughter to mother. Carefully, Gertrude opened the journal and started turning the pages. Cynthia pulled a chair up next to the hospital bed and sat watching her mother compose her thoughts.
Instantly, Cynthia could see her mother’s entire disposition change. She adjusted herself and sat upright in bed. It seemed as if Gertrude had gained an inner sense of hidden strength. It looked as if she was silently reminiscing about a time in her life that made her very happy. Then, in a vigorous voice, Gertrude proudly responded, “Of course I can read it. I wrote it. I was in the Hitler Youth.”
KABOOM!
Cynthia could not believe what she was hearing! She was in shock! Her mother was in the Hitler Youth. A million questions raced through her mind as she continued to watch her mother gingerly turn each page.
Gertrude turned a few more pages then closed the journal, placed both hands on the book and looked her daughter straight in her eyes. In a very stern voice, she pointed her finger at her daughter and said, “Do NOT show this book to anyone because they will kill you!”
Cynthia felt a deep sense of electrified foreboding vibrate through her body which immediately permutated into a sense of adventure. “Well, all righty then!” she said as she clasped and rubbed both hands together. “What’s in the book?”
This began a 24 year-long journey of finding her mother’s roots. She has since been able to go back 5 generations on both her mother and father’s side of the family.
